Kueh pie tee is a beloved Peranakan dish that is especially loved in the Malaysian states of Penang and Melaka, and the city-state of Singapore. All three areas are hubs of the Peranakan-Nyonya culture. Some people assert that pie tee is named after the word “patty” and could be the Peranakan equivalent of a British pastry. Others claim that kueh pie tee sprang up in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation.

Whatever the story may be, Singaporeans and Malaysians can collectively agree that kueh pie tee is a delicious dish that perfectly combines the crispy tart shell and the savoury goodness of the fillings.

The treat is formed of a thin, crispy pastry shell that is stuffed with a variety of vegetables and a mix of spices. It is also suitable for vegetarians. As it resembles an upside-down hat, kueh pie tee is known as “top hat” in Melaka. The pastry may appear slightly different depending on where you go. In Melaka, for instance, the edges fan outward (like a hat’s brim), whilst the Singaporean version appears more like a delicate cup.
